It's said that an author's first work is his most autobiographical. For Eden James, it seems that this isn't quite true, with his latest record Never Setting Sun finally fitting like that pair of comfortable old jeans. Finding these ethereal songwriter jeans didn't come by overnight: hunting through the op shop of musical styles, it's been a lifetime evolution, moving between different groups and searching for the elements that would one day click together in a moment of cosmic clarity. This has resulted in a trail of broken hearts throughout his life, having flings with almost any instrument that would have him, waking up with a hangover and patchy memories of a tawdry jam session the night before. As singer-songwriter, the childhood romance with piano has led to separation, and Eden is now seeing a saucy Fender acoustic. The piano still has visiting rights. Love and love lost are recurring themes, not only in his choice of instrument, but within many of Eden's songs. 'I'm a romantic idiot,' Eden states proudly. 'I believe in romance, and to be in love. That's when the world is a beautiful place. Even if it's just in your own damn-fool, love-blinded eyes.' The other mainstay in Eden's life has been his love of language; the use of words, and how they are merged to form meaning, then fusing this meaning to sounds and melody to create a living entity - one that evokes an emotional response. While this ritual may seem like a difficult task to perfect, Eden is able to look beyond the surface and find the common joining element - passion. It's Eden's passion that drives him on, be it for wine, women, or wordplay. It forms the crux of who he is, and why he writes. It's his songwriting soul. 'Tunnel vision. When I set my mind to something, that's all I see,' he explains. 'I'm one of those people who always has something on and is always doing something. I've got 100 things to do in my head and try to prioritise them.' How he has been able to solve the age-long problem of prioritising wine, women, and song is anyone's guess - but buy him a beer and he might let you in on a thing or two. Or he might just drink your beer. Whichever it is, don't expect any debate about the current state of the globe, or who won the football. 'I'm not exactly Mr. Current Affairs. I never watch the news or hardly any television. I'd rather be doing something productive or spending time with friends. That's more real than a bit of video and a voiceover.' And with that, the beer is gone, and Eden is off - prioritising his next task. 'On a whole I think the world's a good place to be. I mean life can be shit and cruel, but it can also make you feel euphoric. It's all we have, so make the best of it.' Eden's done just that, and it's called Never Setting Sun.
